Summer Community Gathering & Local Food Festival
Fredericton will host its first ever Local Food Festival on August 26 in Wilmot Park. David Coon’s annual Summer Community Gathering, will be part of this Festival and you, along with the City Councillors in his riding, are invited to attend.
The theme will be local food and food security in New Brunswick. Information collected at the gathering will inform your MLA and city councillors as well as help the NB Food Security Action Network create a local food security strategy for New Brunswick.
Two years ago, David introduced a bill on local food security to decrease our reliance on food imports. Since then, despite the bill’s defeat, considerable progress has been made. The government produced a local food strategy of its own, and the Department of Agriculture is supporting a co-op based out of Miramichi to store and distribute local food, starting with a goal to serve 30% NB-produced food in schools.
We continue to see growth in the craft beer and cider industries and local restaurants are leading the charge on local food, building their menus around what local farmers are able to provide. Despite this progress, more remains to be done. We hope you will join David on August 26th at 3:00 to share your ideas to build a stronger local food industry in Fredericton and across the province.
